Why Do I Need to Have My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Your wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last permanent teeth to come in, usually between the ages of 17 and 21. Unfortunately, they often cause problems and must be removed. At High Street Dentistry, we will evaluate you, and let you know if we recommend wisdom tooth extraction.

Why Remove Your Wisdom Teeth?

Most people don’t have sufficient room to accommodate the incoming wisdom teeth, which often results in them being impacted, or trapped in the jaw. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause immense pressure and pain. In some cases, these third molars come in at the wrong angle, pressing against the adjacent teeth, and pushing them out of alignment.

Wisdom teeth are hard to clean properly, being so far at the back of the mouth. That can result in cavities or infections, which can damage the bone and the surrounding teeth. Even if your wisdom teeth erupt correctly, if they have the potential of causing problems, we may recommend their removal.

What Should You Expect?

We will meet with you to discuss the whether you need to have your wisdom teeth extracted.  If that procedure is recommended, we will refer you to one of our trusted colleagues.

The Healing Process

Once the procedure is over, the healing process begins. Place an icepack on the area to alleviate any discomfort and reduce swelling. Refrain from smoking, spitting forcefully, drinking through a straw, or rinsing vigorously for 48 hours after the procedure. Otherwise, you risk dislodging the clot forming in the tooth socket, which can lead to a painful condition called dry socket.

After your procedure, if you have a fever, experience shortness of breath, vomiting, or uncontrolled bleeding, or if the extraction site becomes very painful those are signs that need immediate attention.
